Raising Arizona (1987) -( click title)

Oscar: This is probably in the top 25 list of my favorite films of all time. It is so ridiculously funny and entertaining that I’ve seen it many times over the years. Not sure why, but I decided to insert Charles Martin Smith’s character “The Toad” from American Graffiti (1973)…just the gag referencing the above-mentioned movie that popped into my warped brain I guess!! The entire cast in this film is perfect!! I LOVE this movie. Nicholas Cage was so funny as H.I. Mcdonnough. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 91% but I would give it a 99.9%!!! If you have never seen this movie then I am jealous because I’d love to see it again in my innocence!!

Emmy: It is a fun watch for sure. It is so bizarre and hilarious making it a very rare watch. Nick Cage was great I agree, but the WHOLE cast was in on it…They were all over-the-top characters but it totally worked! A very unique and warped movie that all fit together in a strange way with odd characters!!! Love it as well!!

my favorite was holly hunter. She was spectacular. But all cast members were right for their parts. Have you drawn any other cohen brothers movies?

Hi Sue, welcome to the blog!! I agree with you that Holly Hunter was the unsung hero of this very funny movie. I have drawn The Big Labowski, Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, and No Country for Old Men.

Turn to the right! Turn to the right! Hehe! Love this movie. Nicolas cage is the perfect HI. You’re a flower, you are. Just a little desert flower. I’d watch this again and again. Nice drawing on Cage. Don’t know who that other fella is though in the comic so I don’t really get it.

First off / nice drawing. You’re good. The movie though is narrated by its hero, a man who specializes in robbing convenience stores, but it sounds as if he just graduated from the Rooster Cogburn school of elocution. There are so many “far be it from me’s” and “inasmuches” in his language that he could play Ebenezer Scrooge with the same vocabulary – and that’s not what you expect from a two-bit thief who lives in an Arizona trailer park.

Hello Christopher! Thank you for your thoughtful insights into this film! I agree and respectfully disagree with some of your comments… Most of what you found lacking in this film is what made it a great movie to me. It is very unique. The cadence and the odd dialogue (the Coens use many times in film) is what makes it a fun watch. The movie does not drag at all and as you stated it’s not what you expect from a two-bit thief who lives in a trailer park is what is so hilarious (to me at least). All the characters were strange and I ESPECIALLY loved Trey Wilson who played Nathan Arizona because he was WAY over the top but it worked for me!!

I got cut off on my comment!
And what “Raising Arizona” needs more than anything else is more velocity. Here’s a movie that stretches out every moment for more than it’s worth, until even the moments of inspiration seem forced. Since the basic idea of the movie is a good one and there are talented people in the cast, what we have here is a film shot down by its own forced and mannered style. Just my humble opinion of course.

A  terrifically original, eccentric screwball comedy, Raising Arizona may not be the Coens’ most disciplined movie, but it’s one of their most purely entertaining. And the comic is fantastic.
