Oscar: As I mentioned from the prior post (A Quiet Place) and even MORE SO in THIS movie, the mood that the film set in the beginning as the clock on the wall was ticking and the priest asked what the idol they found meant, the other archeologist said “evil versus evil” and suddenly the clock stopped…THAT set the mood for the entire film … genius!!!

Emmy: I agree with Oscar… the feel of the entire movie started at the point mentioned above and it threaded the film throughout. The hairs on my arms stood straight up until the end credits rolled. I would not recommend this film for kids (even today’s kids), but as an adult it is easier to think outside the film and realize that it is a well-made film… the special effects even for 1973 were top notch and the movie was an uncomfortable watch …just as it was meant to be.

    This movie scared me so bad!! Had nightmares for weeks!

      HAHA my mom took my brothers who were all under the age of 12 to see this film at the theater when it came out. My brothers asked if they could sleep in a church that night. Either my mom was clueless of the movie or was just super punk rock remains a mystery!!! Apparently me being 7 was just under the age limit for my mom hahaha.

      YES it was…still is. At the very start when the clock stopped in the background as they spoke of the idol the film really started.

    First, love the wit in the comic. Before watching The Exorcist, I assumed it would simply be a story about a young girl in need of an exorcism. I was mistaken. This film operates on multiple levels simultaneously, weaving together several narratives that eventually converge into one compelling and deeply unsettling experience. The opening sequences in Egypt appear disconnected at first, yet they establish themes and tensions that become increasingly important as the story unfolds. Alongside this is the personal journey of a priest wrestling with faith, doubt, and tragedy, while another storyline follows a young girl whose condition becomes more disturbing with each passing scene. Because these threads are developed gradually, viewers must pay close attention. This is not a film to watch while distracted or half-asleep; important details are easy to miss. While occasionally confusing, the complexity ultimately rewards patience. The Exorcist is more than a horror film—it is a study of faith, sacrifice, evil,and unknown

      Thank you for the EXCELLENT commentary, Movie Buff…spot on!! I love the slow burn that turns into a raging inferno in this movie!! You mentioned the opening sequences which adds so much more to this film. The little nuances in the first 30 minutes of this film are subtle but very powerful… a master class in building the tension of a movie. Good Stuff from responses…love it!!!

    I agree with Oscar, that clock scene scared me so bad. Brilliant writing. Not sure if kids today think this is a scary movie but it STILL scares me today.

      I know it Bob…Kids these days have sooooo much info available to them…too much. I think their imaginations suffer from hyper overload to the point of just being numb to a lot of things.

    my mom let me dress up as Linda Blair for Halloween the year it came out. I mean what? I needed spit pea soup for a prop. Lol

      Oh Jane YES!!! That would’ve been EPIC if you would’ve went up to the door, knocked and spit up some spit pea soup on their porch!!!!

    evil vs. evil. Scariest line ever — then the damn click stops! Thus movie is scarier than any modern day horror movie. I like your take on it too

      Thank you Windstorm!! That is so right…this movie from 1973 beats out all the so-called scary movies of today in my opinion. The clock stopping as he is saying ‘evil against evil’ is so ominous for such a small moment in the movie and it is perfectly well timed!!
